The opposition leader from Belarus is coming to Romania

Monday, on the 28th of November, join us for a talk with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition on freedom, dictators and the fight for democracy. We are organizing an event together with friends from Forum Apulum and in partnership with the University of Bucharest, at The "Ioan Mihăilescu" amphitheater of the Rectorate (Șoseaua Panduri, nr. 90), începând cu starting with 17:00.

A symbol of the peaceful struggle for democracy and female leadership, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was nominated, in 2020, by Lithuanian President Nauseda and Norwegian parliamentarians for the Nobel Peace Prize. Moreover, she campaigned for the release of over 500 political prisoners and for peaceful change through free and fair elections. In her meetings with Chancellor Merkel, President Macron, President von der Leyen, President Charles Michel and other world leaders, she emphasized the need for a more courageous response to the actions of the Belarusian dictatorship.

The leader of the democratic forces of Belarus, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya ran against autocratic President Aleksandr Lukashenko in the presidential election on August 9, 2020. She entered the race after her husband was arrested for his presidential aspirations. Tikhanovskaya united the democratic forces of Belarus together with two other leaders – Maria Kalesnikava and Veranika Tsapkala. Winner of the Sakharov Prize awarded by the European Parliament, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya is included in the list of the 50 most influential people in the world (Bloomberg), in the list of the 12 most influential women in the world (Financial Times), as well as in Politico's list of the most influential 28 Europeans.
